Let me start with On-Page Optimization as it play a Major Role in Search Engines.

Keyword Research is a Basic and very important part of SEO (search engine optimization). If you don’t have a good concept of your keywords and keyword phrases. If you want to rank high in search engines, you need to choose your keywords carefully.

This blog is about Daily SEO Updates, so I might decide to use, “SEO Updates” as a keyword phrase. However, there’s over “454,000″ other sites ranked for that keyword, which means a lot of competition for me.

It’s really not just as simple as coming up with a list of words

Keyword research isn’t just about finding keywords. It’s about finding good keywords with competition you can beat. For example, I’m going to have a much easier time ranking for, “SEO Updates,” than I am for my first keyword choice.

Here are the few steps to take in your Keywords Research.

  • Finding The Right Keywords And Keyword Phrases:

You have to analyze your website and decide what key phrases are important to you and what keywords suits your theme. Getting into the mind of the customer or visitor is the first step to Keyword Research so stand in the shoe of a Visitor and try to analyze the keywords that your visitors would be searching for. Which search terms can you rank well for (High Search Volume and Low Competition)?

There are many useful tools in WWW that can help you with this. If you have money to spend buy Wordtracker. Otherwise use Good Keywords or Google’s Keyword Suggestion Tool.

Please understand that these tools can be valuable, but are far from being 100% accurate. They can help you with your initial research and give you ideas for new key phrases. Some of these tools only sample a small part of the actual data. Perhaps only 2%. There sample size of data can give you some ideas of your key phrase importance, but please don’t rely on them completely. You can easily see how many other websites are listed for a particular key phrase by entering it into a search engine such as Google. Use quotes around your phrase to find sites with the exact phrase.

  • Find Out What Your Most Valuable Key Phrases Are

The shorter and simpler key phrases are usually the most searched for terms. And of course they are also the hardest to get ranked well for in most cases. You will have to decide if you can get ranked well enough using these key phrases. If not then concentrate on longer search phrases that would be easier to rank well. You can certainly go for both. The longer key phrases are also known as “Long Tail Keywords”. I would recommend using two or three word phrase when possible. Longer Key Phrases are easier to rank well for then a single word.

NEVER try to target keywords that are not relevant to your site. You want qualified traffic from people who have spent time on a search engine or directory specifically to find the products and services you offer. The more qualified the traffic the more easily that traffic will translate into sales.

  • How Optimized Are Your Competitors

Just how optimized are your competitors for your key phrases? Can you outdo them? If you feel that you can do better, then, definitely go after those key phrases. Even if you are doubtful, why not give it a try. You may surprise yourself.

If it seems to be just too far reaching for you then you may have to come up with some creative and longer key phrases. Concentrate more on these in your web pages.

In either case use both the shorter and longer key phrases if possible. This can be done fairly easy if you have multiple pages on your web site. The important thing to get right is the key phrases that your visitors are using to find you. Target these and you will increase your targeted visitors. That is good for both of you. Target the right key phrases and you will succeed in higher rankings and happier visitors.

Things to Remember:

  • Research your keywords carefully.
  • Pick the most important Keyword(High Search Volume & Low Competition).
  • Use the Key Phrase in the Title, H1, Description and Keyword tags.(I will cover this in Future)
